Blast from the past?

with no power it was easy to make time to read and get a little ahead in the reading. In chapter 6 i did not understand why was happening in the beginning until i got about half way through the chapter. It was then that i realized i was finding out about Gatsby's past. This part is really confusing so I'm going to focus in on the last page or two of the chapter. In this closing dialog of Gatsby and Nick we find out Gatsby is not living in the present. He is stuck in the past where he fell in love with Daisy and is trying to get her to be like that again. "Can't repeat the past? he cried incredulously. why of source you can!" (page 111) This quote really sums up my point of Gatsby not living in the now. He has this ideal of Daisy from five years ago and it is not the same daisy as he sees now. I predict he is going to do something extreme in the next few chapters to try and get Daisy to go back to the Daisy he fell in love with. 

A couple other events i want to touch on include Tom. Tom shows some signs of jealousy when he finds out Gatsby knows Daisy and he mentions he wants to find out where his money came from and who he is. This kind of makes me really think about my old prediction where Tom is going to get upset at Gatsby and try to destroy him. On another note it is kind of weird to see Tom jealous and upset at Daisy for knowing a man whom he does not know she had relations with yet he is seeing a mistress? Tom seem to be a bully when things are going his way he's happy but when something he does not like happens he instantly becomes a monster that wants to destroy whatever makes him angry. Thats really all i have to say for now, and i can not wait to see if my prediction keeps following the path i think it will. 

Chapter 5 The Awkward Get together

As i got through reading chapter five i was even more confused about Mr. Gatsby then i was before even reading the book. Gatsby seemed to me to be this proper gentleman that knows how to handle any situation, but then comes the meeting with daisy and things got a little weird. He started acting like a high school boy around his crush being very shy and even tried to back out of the whole meeting that he planned in the first place.  I think Gatsby was feeling very nervous as was Daisy. Daisy was probably also feeling very surprised as she was not expecting Gatsby to be there. The fact that when she got there she asked Nick if he was in love with her is a little weird to me. Nick was a little strange to seeing as he left the get together and went out under his tree for half an hour. I really wanted to know what he could be doing for half an hour under a tree. However, as the get together continued and Gatsby showed Daisy his mansion i feel like they both got more comfortable and a little more affectionate. I still do not know what happened at the end when nick left them alone but i can predict that it is similar to what Tom and Daisy have going on. I predict now that Gatsby and Daisy are reacquainted they are going to be seeing a lot more of each other. I also think that Tom will find out and be furious and Daisy will bring up the mistress and this will make Tom very angry and violent. I have no facts to back this up this is just a gut feeling prediction.

To expand on this, i believe that Gatsby has a lot more information about his character given to us in this chapter. I do however believe that it also makes him even more mysterious. Daisy and him seem to really kick it off after an awkward hour or so and i do not fully understand their relationship yet. i stand by my prediction. Gatsby grows more and more interesting and mysterious and we still do not know where his fortune comes from.

The Meeting

In chapter one we get to meet a few of the main characters. During this little get together I started developing some of my ideas about the main and side characters. Tom on one hand seems like he needs an attitude adjustment where as daisy on the other hand really needs to see the big picture. I think when Tom received the call from his mistress daisy started feeling a little upset and embarrassed  When she came back she played it off saying " it could not be helped." i think she just is embarrassed by it. One theme i think that is at work during this chapter is be open and honest. As we could see from daisy she acted a lot more strange after the call and did not want nick finding out about Tom. I predict that Daisy and Tom are going to have some issues but i do not think daisy will really act on them. she seems to timid to stand up for herself to Tom.

To add to these characters it seems like Nick takes an early fancy to Jordan. I really do not know how this relationship will be but Nick seems to be very formal with them all. At this point i know the  book is told by nick but i do not know who the book will focus on. Will it focus on Daisy and Nick? Tom and his mistress? Gatsby? i do not  know and only reading will tell me ill be back with more in just a little while.
